Ryan Howard Still Finding His
Groove
Wednesday,
March
20th - Michael Williams
Although
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard has
an average of .306 with two home runs and 9 RBIs in
36 at-bats, he is still not comfortable at the plate.
Ryan Howard has just
finished his best season which is one of the best in
baseball by a second year player. He hit 58 home
runs and had 149 RBIs with a batting average of
.313. His 58 home runs that the most in MLB after
Barry Bonds’ 73 home runs in 2001. No other player
has hit so many home runs in his second year.
In November 2006, when the All Stars played the
Japanese stars, Howard had 4 home runs with 8 RBIs
and he helped the All Stars win all the 5 games.
Right after this, Howard become hot property and was
in great demand. He filmed a Super Bowl commercial
and attended numerous functions and banquets that
his offseason workouts were affected.
In 2005, Howard was the NL Rookie of the Year and
this followed his spectacular play which nearly
helped the Phillies make it to the playoffs. He had
an average of .355 with 30 home runs and 78 RBIs but
the Phillies lost the NL wild card berth because
they were 3 wins short.
At the moment in Spring Training, Howard is
struggling with his timing. Manager Charlie Manuel
said that Howard was not seeing the ball too well at
the moment but he was not too worried about it.
Hopefully, Ryan Howard will be able to get his act
together before the regular season starts.
