MNBA commissioner David Stern, who is currently in a Europe tour for the league, argued that the current complaints about his league's new ball will fade in the near future and will win over the players with time just like in soccer.
During the last two weeks, the new official NBA basketball found itself amid controversy. Many major players were very critical at the new ball. For instance O'Neal publicly complained many times about the control over the new ball arguing that it is harder to control the ball than with the previous one forecasting that shooting percentage will go down while the turnovers will soar. Some other NBA biggest stars such as Dwyane Wade or Steve Nash reported that the ball was sticky when dry and slippery when wet.
According to Stern players will stop complaining about the new ball just like soccer players. A new Adidas ball was introduced before the World Cup this year. When players start playing with the new ball heavy criticism from many players, especially goalkeepers, were raised at the new ball. Identical commentary and complaints were made at the ball. But few complaints were heard during the tournament.
Stern, who was in Cologne to attend the final day of a four-team tournament that includes the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers, would keep however monitoring the situation. He emphasizes that as the players will get accustomed to the new ball, it will become less and less of an issue for the league.
On another aspect Stern also announced that NBA teams will continue to tour Europe for pre-season games n the near future taking into account the fact that the current trip was a complete success. The league intends to make it an annual fair since players also enjoyed to play in Europe. The NBA commissioner also reported that many cities are eager to host NBA pre-season games such as London. In addition to the Suns and Philadelphia 75ers, two other teams, the Los Angeles Clippers and the San Antonio Spurs, have also been playing in Europe.
