Haynesworth Suspended for Five Games

Albert Haynesworth, the Tennessee Titans defensive tackle, has been suspended by the NFL for five games – getting the longest suspension for on-field behavior in NFL history.

Albert Haynesworth, whose behavior has already put him in trouble with teammates and coaches before, stomped on and kicked Dallas Cowboys center Andre Gurode's face during last match. Gurode, who needed 30 stitches to repair the cuts, is now considering criminal charges and a civil lawsuit.

Haynesworth has been suspended for five games on charges of “flagrant unnecessary roughness”. He will not be paid while he serves the suspension, effective immediately, which will cost him approximately $190,000. Titans coach Jeff Fisher asserted that Haynesworth was remorseful and embarrassed. But Fisher condemned heavily the behavior of his player and called Haynesworth's actions “unacceptable”.

Haynesworth's has already encountered numerous problems during his career. But it had been hidden from media because they took place in practice. As he was still a sophomore at Tennessee, he had a fight with a teammate and left practice, returning with a long pole looking for tackle Will Ofenheusle before coach Phillip Fulmer stopped him. During 2003 Titans training camp, Haynesworth also kicked center Justin Hartwig, now playing with Carolina. Other charges for a road rage incident earlier this year were also dismissed.

Before Haynesworth, the longest suspension for on-field behavior was only two games for Green Bay defensive lineman Charles Martin for throwing Chicago quarterback Jim McMahon to the ground during a game on Nov. 23, 1986. But if charges are brought against Haynesworth, it would be the first time that police would be involved following an on-field incident. If no charges are pressed against Haynesworth, the tackle will be allowed to return for the Titans' game at Philadelphia on Nov. 19.
