Since its brilliant Sunday’s comeback victory over the San Diego Chargers, the Baltimore Raven remain undefeated, but not without paying a price. The team just lost its starting left guard, Edwin Mulitalo.
Mulitalo, left the game in the second half of the Ravens' 16-13 victory, with his right arm dangling at his side. There were huge concerns in the Baltimore locker room after he left that his injury was very serious. An MRI exam on Monday morning revealed that the eighth-year veteran suffered a torn right triceps tendon. Later in the same day Mulitalo underwent surgery to repair the injury. Mulitalo will be out for the balance of the season. He will be placed on the injured reserve list of the Ravens.
The loss of Mulitalo is a huge setback for the Ravens. He formed with Pro Bowl tackle Jonathan Ogden one of the NFL's best left sides. Even though he has suffered some lows in his career too, Mulitalo is regarded as a powerful in-line drive-blocker who has approached Pro Bowl-level run-blocking at various stretches of his career.
The former Arizona standout was a fourth-round choice of the Ravens in the 1999 draft and has appeared in 106 games, starting 102 of them. Since 2000, his second season in the league, Mulitalo has averaged 15.0 starts and never started fewer than 14 games.
Second-year veteran Jason Brown, a fourth-round choice in the 2005 draft who has appeared in only nine games, will be the replacement of Mulitalo in the lineup. The only regular season start for Brown came last year when he replaced Mulitalo on a Dec. 11 game at Denver. The Ravens will play against the Broncos at Invesco Field next week.
