Chris Simms, who underwent emergency surgery to remove his spleen last week, was eventually released from the hospital on Saturday.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa on Sunday 24th after being injured during the game against the Carolina Panthers. Even though he is expected to make a full recovery, his future as a football player is still uncertain. However Gruden claimed that Simms, 26, is very optimistic about his chances to join the team again.
During the Buccaneers’ loss, Simms, the son of former Giants quarterback Phil Simms, seems to have been injured after receiving a number of hard blows. But he was treated and returned to the game. The team medical personnel had diagnosed, during the match, only a sore ribs and dehydration. Right after the match Simms has been quickly brought to hospital when it became clear his injuries were more serious.
It is still unknown if Simms’ injury occurred on the last particular play or resulted from an accumulation of bad hits. However the NFL fined Panthers defender Al Wallace $7,500 for a fourth-quarter hit in which he landed on top of Simms on a pass play. After learning Simms had been hospitalized, Wallace publicly claimed that he deeply regrets what happened and that he never intended to make any damage to anybody or jeopardize anyone’s health.
