Titan’s Coach Fisher not in Jeopardy
Wednesday, October 4th - Michael Williams
In spite of the Titans’ poor performance, a 0-4 start and a seven-game losing streak dating back to the 2005, Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams insisted that coach Jeff Fisher's job is not in jeopardy this season.
Adams pointed out, as a joke, that if he fired Jeff Fisher now he would have to pay him $2.5 million, which is half of his scheduled base salary, to do nothing and rest. More seriously he explained his decision of keeping Fisher by claiming that Titan’s poor performance could not be attributed to Fisher only.
Most NFL owners who played against the Dallas Cowboys in recent years have all suffered a long losing streak. Besides firing a head coach in-season generally does not reverse a team's fortune. Considering this last point, Adams knows what he is talking about. Indeed Adams, who is the only owner the franchise has ever had, has already fired five coaches in-season.
Fisher succeeded Pardee in 1994 and has compiled a 102-93 record including the playoffs. He has taken the Titans to the postseason four times, twice as a division champion and twice as a wild card entry. But Tennessee is just 9-27 since its last qualifying for the playoffs in 2003. Fisher extended his contract three years ago, which made him one of the NFL's highest paid head coaches. But he is currently working in an option year. His deal provided the Titans options in each of the final two years of the contract.
The 48-year-old Fisher is regarded as one of the NFL's best coaches. Most players have also heavily supported Fisher. But taking into account the team's poor start and recent awful handling of the quarterback situation in training camp, when the club signed free agent Kerry Collins to be the starter less than two weeks before the opening game, Fisher may lose quickly all this external support.
