Washington Redskins Trade Adam
Archuleta For Draft Pick
Wednesday,
March
20th - Michael Williams
Washington
Redskins traded Adam Archuleta to the Chicago Bears
in lieu of a sixth round draft pick. This signals an
end to Archuleta’s turbulent times with the
Redskins. Archuleta spent most of the last season on
the bench even though he was the highest paid safety
in the NFL.
Adam
Archuleta signed up with the
Redskins a year ago on a seven year contract which
was worth $35 million and included $10 million in
bonuses. Redskins finalized the deal with the Bears
just a day before Archuleta was due to receive $5
million guaranteed bonus.
The signing of Archuleta by the Redskins was one of
the biggest blunders in the NFL. The assistant
coach, Gregg Williams, used Archuleta as a coverage
safety when he was linebacker. However, Archuleta
could not perform in his new position and was soon
benched. Archuleta did manage to regain his starting
job for the first seven regular season game. This
happened because Pierson Prioleau sustained a knee.
However, the Redskins ultimately removed Archuleta
from the defense completely and he was used only in
special teams in the second half of the season. The
Redskins never gave a reason as to why Archuleta was
benched.
Given the size of his contract, the Redskins could
not cut him off completely as they would have
suffered on this year’s salary cap. Archuleta was
due to join the Bears last year as a free agent but
changed his mind after the Redskins offered him a
bigger contract.
The Bears were the only team Adam Archuleta could
have gone to because of the relationship he has with
the Bears’ current coach, Lovie Smith. Smith was
Archuleta’s former defensive coordinator at St Louis
Rams.
